Carlos Raúl Dufflar is a poet, playwright, singer, and Artistic Director of The Bread is Rising Poetry Collective. Carlos was nourished by his great-grandmother’s poetry and his aunt nourished him with the poetry of José Martí. As a teenager, he began writing poetry and his first published poem was in What’s Happening by the Neighborhood House. Carlos has been spreading love and consciousness throughout the US, Canada, England, and Puerto Rico. His poetry has been published by Farmworker, Home Planet News, Antioch Voices, Street News, Looking Glass News, The New Alliance, People’s Voice, The People’s Culture, Antioch West Letters, and The Catalyst. Carlos has been published in anthologies  Open Moments (Barnard College), Poetry on the Road to Peace, Vols. 2& 3 (Yale Peabody Museum/Yale University Press), Drumvoices Revue, Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry JamThe Hammer, The Blue Collar Review, Federation Magazine, Reclaiming Our Community Vol. 3, New Brunswick Free Public Library Poetry Anthology, Let Loose on the World: Celebrating Amiri Baraka at 75, Brilliant Fire! Amiri Baraka, and a spoken word CD called Spirit of the Truth.

His chapbooks include El Barrio de Naomi, The Eye of a Flower, Haravek, La Tricheras de la Vida, When There’s No Justice The Drums Will Rise, Agustina Meléndez Alvarez – Tobacco Worker, and A Time to Heal and Live in Aquohong.

Plays which he has directed: Paradise Guajiro Who Lives in Barrio for Life, La Gente Noble, The Church of the Living Dollar, The Shelter is Not for Homeless, and The Diary of Mrs. Ann.

He was a member of the collective Pure Poetry for the People on KPOO 89.5 FM (San Francisco) and Poetry Corner on WHCR 90.3 FM (New York).

Carlos has a bachelor’s degree in Creative Arts from Antioch College.
