Beat Poet Laureate Title and Award Program

  • Beat Poet Laureate Title and Award Program
  • Deborah (Debbie) Tosun Kilday owner, founder, and CEO of the National Beat Poetry Foundation, Inc. is the sole proprietor and creator of a first of its kind, the Beat Poet Laureate title and award program started in 2015. It is unique as it acknowledges word artists that do not necessarily come from mainstream poetry groups, or follow any set style or form of writing. Instead they write about subjects that are meaningful to them as individuals without being judged, or repressed, as were the original Beat Generation of writers. They are unique or “Beat”. Each Beat laureate shows a different style of writing as a way of communicating with other people and giving them their opinion on certain ideas, topics, or items, often hidden or frowned upon.
  • The original Beat Generation of writers were repressed by society and forced to perform in underground clubs and taverns. The new generation of beat poets are now being brought into the spotlight and given a chance to have their own voice, and writing in their own style.
  • Since the inception of the beat poet laureate award program, the number of Beat Poet Laureates has grown and continues. The awardees are chosen by an anonymous group of writers and also recommended by past and present beat laureates and given out by the foundation owner, Deborah (Debbie) Tosun Kilday who makes all the final decisions.
  • How Beat Poet Laureates Are Chosen
  • Beat Poet/Artist Laureates are chosen by their peers and through recommendations that are submitted to Deborah (Debbie) Tosun Kilday by email to NBPF15@GMAIL.COM. An anonymous committee of 7 people from different poetry groups, past and present NBPF Beat Poet Laureates, plus  others, give recommendations and reviews, and then vote on their choices, given the information received. The committee then forwards their findings to Deborah (Debbie) Tosun Kilday, owner, who then, after doing her own research and compiling the information received, then makes the final decisions based on several different factors. In order to be considered to be a Beat Poet/ Artist Laureate, It helps to show you are interested in our group and social media pages. Attending our events, held both online and in person is also encouraged as well as submitting your work to our beat anthologies to be seen and your work read. Our family of Beat Poets & Artists Laureate keeps growing each year as we continue to write and carry on the tradition set by the original Beat Generation, but also to evolve, to write and reflect the times we live in today with our writing and also through our expressions as artists.
